Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
This is one of the longest books I’ve read in a while- 20 hours on audiobook! BUT it was so worth it! There’s tons of twists- most of which I didn’t exactly see coming. It’s definitely dark and witty, and Karin Slaughter does an amazing job of developing the many players in the story.
Claire Scott gets the shock of her life when, first, her husband Paul takes her to an ally to fuck, and second, when her husband gets stabbed in said alley and she’s left behind to pick up the pieces of her life without him. She feels completely alone- her family was ripped apart, after all, by the disappearance of her older sister Julia when she was 19 years old. As Claire grieves the death of her husband and recovers from the shock of finding her home burglarized the day of his funeral, she begins to discover that her life is even more dark and complicated than it had seemed. But who can she trust to unravel the mystery that was (is?) her precise, organized, obsessive (murderer?) husband? The more she and her younger sister Lydia dig into Paul Scott’s belongings, the closer they get to the truth of what really happened that day Julia disappeared.
The wrap up at the end of this novel was a little too easy and cliche for me, but it worked! Some of the twists were a little predictable, but honestly I didn’t mind because the writing was so great. I will definitely be reaching for more Karin Slaughter when I need a dark thriller!
